If you are starting your water pumping and irrigation journey, there are some things you would like to know about selecting and operating generators to run your pumps. A farm or home without running water is hard to manage. To enjoy farming you need to have an option to supply water by using a generator to run your irrigation pumps.
Electric (AC) pumps are the most common and affordable water pumps currently available on the market. If you are not connected to the national electricity grid, you might have to opt for a generator to provide an alternative source of power to run your water pump.

Types of generators

Generators are classified in different categories depending on the size, engine type, and use. Generators classified on engine types include diesel, petrol or natural gas engine generators. Generators can also be standby or duty generators if classified based on there application. They can also be classified as portable or non-portable.
Each generator type has it’s own unique features, qualities, applications, and disadvantages. Great care has to be taken while choosing which generators.

Size of the generator

Generators are helpful in a steady supply of water and it’s important to chose the right generator to run your pumps. When a generator is too big compared to it’s motor, it will consume alot of fuel and reduce the efficiency of the generator. The generator basic efficiency should be 65% of the rated voltage.
However, when the generator is too large, this efficiency will drop between 30- 50 %. In addition, when the load given to the generator is very low/ small, the engine will encounter a number of problems. For example, the engine may carbon up and glaze due to overloading.
On the other hand, when a generator is too small, it’s voltage will be insufficient to run the pumps. Increasing the load compared to the size of the generator will slow down the generator. In other words, the generator will stall. This will subsequently damage the generator and other equipment.

Operating the generator

In order to have a smooth operation of your generator in running domestic pumps, you ought to follow the manufacture’s manual and instructions on how to operate the generator. You may not need a professional to operate the generator but you need to have the basic knowledge of operation such that the generator and all other equipment are not damaged.
Always start the generator before the motor and stop the motor before you shut down the generator. Mistakenly, a generator may be stopped while the motor is running. This will damage the thrust bearing. Operators must avoid this mistake.
The manufacturers usually provide a recommended rating under certain conditions, this should be observed and followed.

Maintaining the generator

It is important to perform maintenance checks on your generator in order to ensure it is performing it’s tasks in the recommended conditions and avoid breakdown. Inspection should be done to check for leaks, asses oil and coolant levels, check battery terminals and cables and ensure hoses and belts are in good working conditions.
Also, fuel cleaning and filtering should be carried out after a few weeks of operation. It is recommended that you change your generator fuels every after 100 hours of operation. It is also vital to exercise the generator over the load for at least 30 minutes weekly. This activity aids charging the battery removes excess wetness, lubricates the engine, and filters the fuel.
Keeping records of the maintenance tests and inspection is a good practice for future inspections. These records will help you stay knowledgeable about the status and performance of your generator.
