Get Up to UGX 5,000,000 (60%) Subsidy on Solar Irrigation Systems in Uganda

Unpredictable rainfall, prolonged dry spells, and rising production costs continue to affect farmers across Uganda. For farmers relying on rain-fed agriculture, this uncertainty directly impacts yields, income, and long-term farm sustainability.

To address this challenge, Sprinktech, in partnership with the Uganda Energy Credit Capitalisation Company (UECCC), is supporting eligible farmers to access solar-powered irrigation systems at subsidised rates.

Through this program, farmers can receive up to UGX 5,000,000 or 60% subsidy on approved solar irrigation kits — significantly reducing the upfront cost of irrigation and enabling year-round farming.

This initiative supports Uganda’s national goals for clean energy adoption, modern irrigation, and climate-resilient agriculture.

What Is the Solar Irrigation Subsidy?

The solar irrigation subsidy is a cost-sharing program that helps Ugandan farmers afford solar-powered irrigation systems.

How it works:

  • The farmer pays approximately 40% of the total system cost
  • The subsidy covers up to 60%, capped at UGX 5,000,000
  • Sprinktech supplies, installs, and commissions the complete system

This structure makes irrigation accessible to both smallholder and commercial farmers.

Why Choose Solar Irrigation?

Solar-powered irrigation offers long-term value by:

  • Eliminating fuel and electricity costs
  • Reducing operating and maintenance expenses
  • Providing reliable water supply in off-grid and rural areas
  • Supporting environmentally sustainable farming

When combined with efficient irrigation methods such as drip and sprinkler systems, farmers improve water efficiency while increasing yields and profitability.

Who Is Eligible for the Subsidy?

You may qualify if you:

  • Have access to a water source (river, lake, borehole, dam, or well)
  • Own or manage land suitable for irrigation
  • Can contribute approximately 40% co-payment
  • Intend to use irrigation for productive agriculture (crops, horticulture, commercial farming)

Both individual farmers and organised farmer groups are encouraged to apply.

Example: How Much Does a Farmer Pay?

For a solar irrigation system costing UGX 8,000,000:

  • Farmer contribution: ~UGX 3,000,000
  • Subsidy support: Up to UGX 5,000,000

This significantly shortens the return-on-investment period.
