Inspiring the Next Generation: Makerere University Engineering Students Visit Sprinktech

On 8th April 2026, Sprinktech welcomed final-year students from Makerere University’s Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering for a practical learning session. As part of their Sensors and Controls for Smart Irrigation Systems course, led by Dr Sam Cherotich, the visit aimed to connect classroom theory with real-world application.

A Hands-On Learning Experience

The session provided students with hands-on experience using modern irrigation systems. Demonstrations highlighted how smart technology improves water efficiency, reduces waste, and increases productivity.

Key highlights of the training included:

  • Demonstrations of soil moisture sensors and their role in precise irrigation scheduling
  • Exploration of advanced control systems used in automated irrigation
  • Insights into data-driven irrigation management for informed decision-making
  • Live demonstrations featured remotely monitored irrigation systems, which can be observed and controlled from a distance using digital devices, illustrating real-time farm management.

These interactive sessions enabled students to engage directly with the technology, deepening their understanding of irrigation system design and functionality.

Bridging Irrigation Theory and Practice

The visit helped students connect academic concepts to industry applications. They gained insight into challenges and opportunities in Uganda’s irrigation sector and operated Rainbird controllers and automated irrigation systems.

Voices from the Future of Irrigation

The impact of the training is reflected in the students’ own words:

Caroline Babirye, a final-year student of Water and Irrigation Engineering, shared:
“I’ve learned so much, and I’m excited to apply it!”

Daniel Aluma, also a final-year student, expressed his appreciation:
“Grateful to learn smart irrigation systems with automation—skills that will grow my career and help me contribute to agriculture in Uganda and Africa.”

Their enthusiasm demonstrates how experiential learning develops confident, industry-ready graduates.

Building the Future of Agriculture

At Sprinktech, we believe empowering young engineers advances sustainable agriculture in Uganda and Africa. By welcoming students, we foster innovation and inspire future irrigation experts.

This engagement supports our commitment to knowledge sharing, collaboration, and developing practical agricultural solutions.
